From 1994 through 1998 German National Library and the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen library carried out the TITAN project, sponsored by the DFG as part of standardisation efforts to obtain more efficient library services and to facilitate inter-library data flows. The project's goal was to create norms for the uniform titling of works of antiquity applicable for both formal and subject heading reference.
At the conclusion of the project in May 1998, the most important authored and anonymous works had undergone uniform titling. The TITAN master file is part of the Integrated Authority File (GND) and is maintained within it as required. The German National Library in Frankfurt am Main has chief editorial responsibility for TITAN data.
