Bibliotheksservice-Zentrum Baden-Württemberg

The Bibliotheksservice-Zentrum Baden-Württemberg (BSZ - Library Service Centre Baden-Württemberg) is a service provider for academic and public libraries, archives and museums and is based in Konstanz as a legally dependent institution operating under the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts.

The services of the BSZ consist above all in
• Organisation and operation of the Southwest German Library Network in Baden-Württemberg, Saxony and Saarland (SWB)
• Organisation and operation of online interlibrary loans
• Support for and operation of local library systems for academic libraries
• Digital Library services (library portals, SWBplus catalogue enrichment, repositories (OPUS), long-term preservation, virtual information (InfoDesk), electronic reading shelf)
• Support for museums in the introduction and operation of an object documentation system, the BAM portal and as an application service provider for further services.

Competences and priorities in the area of long-term preservation

SWBcontent is a piece of software provided by the BSZ which can be used to save, catalogue and present WWW content (websites and pdf publications). SWBcontent runs in different installations for libraries and archives, and is a pure browser-based solution which does not require the use of a special client.
SWBdepot is a storage solution being set up by the BSZ which facilitates the archiving of stored content and ensures its integrity, even if it was previously not available on the WWW. The storage solution can be expanded as required and is focused particularly on the report mechanisms that are necessary for preservation planning, as well as on customer requirements for securing the significant properties of archived content and its derived presentation in the WWW.
Benchmark interfaces and formats in the field of long-term preservation are consistently observed. The BSZ and its partners participate in national and international projects and initiatives aimed at the development of new tools and standards, as long-term preservation can only be conducted effectively and economically on a cooperative basis and in compliance with existing standards.
