Logo GESIS

The GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences is the largest German infrastructure institution for the social sciences in Germany. GESIS offers its expertise and services to support researchers at all stages of their research projects. This allows socially relevant questions to be answered using the latest scientific methods and on the basis of high-quality data and research information. The GESIS services are geared to the needs of its users. GESIS pools its expertise in the fields of production, use, archiving and provision of research data in order to offer the best possible support in all phases of the research data cycle. The GESIS - Data Archive for the Social Sciences has been providing sociological and political science research data for more than 50 years. These are acquired based on clearly defined requirements and then processed, archived, and made available to the scientifically interested public in accordance with internationally accepted standards. GESIS also combines research and services for selected data collection programs in four research data centres accredited by the German Data Forum.

Competences and priorities in the area of long-term preservation

The basis of the archive's work is meeting the demand for reproducibility and verifiability of empirical research results, as well as facilitating their reuse with new analysis objectives and methods. The long-term safeguarding of data and associated materials has been one of the core functions of the data archive since its inception in 1960. This is necessary because the usability of the digital holdings is threatened above all by technological progress, but also by technical and human failure. The data are processed in sometimes elaborate processes and given standardised metadata, allowing them to be verified and used in the future by other researchers. The GESIS Archive and Data Management Training Center offers advice and support in the area of data management and digital preservation. In cooperation with DataCite, the international initiative to facilitate access to research data, GESIS and the ZBW Leibniz Information Centre for Economics run the da|ra DOI registration service for social and economic data in Germany. GESIS's activities are integrated into a European and international network of social science data archives.
