Saxon State and University Library in Dresden - SLUB

The Saxon State and University Library in Dresden (Sächsische Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek - SLUB) is one of the largest academic libraries in Germany.
As a traditional State library it collects and archives all publications about Saxony, as well as the deposit publications published in Saxony. As the library of the Technical University of Dresden, it is responsible for providing information to a research university with a very wide range of subjects. As a State library, SLUB performs important coordination and service functions for libraries in the free State of Saxony.
SLUB Dresden operates a leading centre for mass digitisation (the Dresden Digitization Center DDZ) and is a member of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek competence network. It participates in many externally-funded digitisation projects and is heavily involved in the development of production and presentation software and robot technology.

Competences and priorities in the area of long-term preservation

SLUB has been involved for many years as a partner in the development of long-term preservation concepts in research projects such as DP4lib and LuKII. A preservation repository system was set up on the basis of an EU project.
The current focus of SLUB lies in designing and implementing workflows for the long-term preservation of digital objects (retro-digitised sources and electronic documents in text, image, audio, video data formats) of SLUB and the university libraries of Saxony. This includes selecting appropriate data and metadata formats, the pre-ingest processing, ingest into the preservation repository, use (access) and preservation planning and action.
SLUB operates its own data centre with a SAN and NAS storage system, as well as tape libraries. As a result, it has experience in storage, archiving, and storage infrastructures that provide the basis for preservation repository systems. The design and procurement of a technical infrastructure for long-term preservation were carried out in collaboration with the Centre for Information Services and High Performance Computing (ZIH) of the TU Dresden, which will take over operation of this infrastructure.
