Business model for metadata services

Terms of use

All bibliographic data from the German National Library, the German Union Catalogue of Serials (ZDB), the metadata of the ISIL and Library Code Directory and the authority data of the Integrated Authority File (GND) as well as the GND-STW cross-concordance (available only in German) is available free of charge for general use under Creative Commons Zero (CC0 1.0) terms.

Most of the holdings data of the German National Library and in the German Union Catalogue of Serials (ZDB) is also free for general use. A corresponding tag is incorporated into the record itself, see also data licensing in the ZDB (available only in German).

The authority data of GND cross-concordances (available only in German) to external thesauri is available free of charge under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license (CC BY 4.0).

The metadata and online interfaces are provided with no guarantee that they will be continuous, punctual, error-free or complete or that they do not violate third-party rights (e.g. personal rights and copyright).

Provision

When sourcing data from the German National Library, it is generally the case that users download the data themselves (basic service) in the standard formats offered by the German National Library via online interfaces or via WWW or SFTP server.
Provision charges will be applied by the German National Library for active provision of data via SFTP or WWW server which are not included in the basic service.

Three months advance notice will be given of fundamental changes to the delivery formats provided. Find out more at Metadatanews.

The metadata and online interfaces are provided with no guarantee that they will be continuous, punctual, error-free or complete or that they do not violate third-party rights (e.g. personal rights and copyright).

By making metadata available free of charge for unrestricted reuse, the German National Library promotes the free flow of data and is one way in which we actively support the vision of an open-access “web of data”.
