Catalogue enrichment 1945–2012

Project description

During the course of this major project, the tables of contents of all the books in the stacks at the Frankfurt am Main location acquired up to 2012 are to be

  • digitised,
  • enriched with text recognition,
  • linked with the relevant data records, and
  • made freely accessible through the portal and data services.

The German National Library has already linked the tables of contents of more than two million books with their bibliographic data; moreover, it has been scanning the tables of contents of all newly acquired books since 2013. This project will be filling in the gaps in the years between 1945 and 2012. Around 5.3 million books in the stacks in Frankfurt am Main are to be checked to find out whether they have tables of contents, while 2.7 million tables of contents comprising around six million pages are to be digitised.

The aims of the project are to improve the cataloguing situation in the long term by digitising the tables of contents, and to make large parts of the cultural heritage printed since 1945 visible in the world of search engines and the internet. Our users access the tables of contents that have already been digitised around 20,000 times a day. This high number shows how successful the service already is.
