On 29 May, the City of Leipzig will again be presenting this year’s Gutenberg Prize in the German Museum of Books and Writing at the German National Library in Leipzig. For the first time in the sixty-year history of the Gutenberg Prize and 30 years after the Peaceful Revolution, the prize for 2019 will not be going to a single person. Instead, it will be awarded to the “Fonts for Freedom” initiative run by “Reporters Without Borders”.

The guided tour of the current temporary exhibition at the German Museum of Books and Writing, “Jan Tschichold – a once-in-a-century typographer? Insights into his legacy”, informs visitors about the colourful life and work of the Leipzig-born typographer – from the first calligraphic works of this son of a sign-painter, to his iconic works of the 1920s, through to his redesigning of UK-based Penguin Books and his late work in Switzerland.

This library is designed to stimulate in-depth engagement with the persecution and murder of European Jews during the Nazi era.

In spring 1933, book burnings took place at more than 90 locations throughout Germany. These were not limited to 10 May 1933, the date which is nowadays mainly associated with the term “book burning”. Books were also burnt before and after this date, for example following the looting of properties.
