About the event

World Digital Preservation Day is celebrated every year on the first Thursday in November – this year on 3.11.2022 and under the motto “Data for all, for good, forever”. The aim of WDPD is to raise awareness of digital preservation worldwide and in society.
nestor takes part in the celebration of WDPD with this event. The first part of the event is dedicated to the preservation of personal digital data and nestor's efforts in this. In the second part we will have a look at file formats and a new interactive tool developed by the hbz.

Personal Digital Archiving – How to create awareness and to disseminate knowledge

Personal digital archiving is becoming much more important, because not only our professional but also our private life is becoming „digital“ more and more. The nestor WG Personal digital archiving aims to create awareness for this topic and to give help with practical advice for private persons. The WG has developed a website with a lot of hints and advice for personal digital preservation.
In this presentation I report which measures the working group has taken to disseminate knowledge by involving different institutions as multipliers for raising awareness and dissemination of know how. I would like to start a discussion on what other measures can be taken in addition to the ones presented here and on the question how comparable institutions in foreign countries do the same job there.

An interactive table of digital file formats - a web-based approach you've always wanted (but were afraid to ask)

Whatever works for Star Wars, Marvel’s superheroes and Heavy Metal styles also works for file formats! The presentation presents an interactive periodic table of the elements, in which common (and not so common) file formats are systematically arranged. This interactive tool is fun to use, but it's more than just fun. Various filter functions make the interactive table usable for numerous teaching and / or exercising purposes in the context of digital preservation. If you've never wanted to deal with this complex matter…things might change now.
