Humboldt Universität zu Berlin

The Humboldt University of Berlin is represented in nestor by three institutions - Computer and Media Service, University Library and Department of Library and Information Science - whose activities are closely interlinked. In 1997 a joint project of the University Library and the Computer and Media Service of the Humboldt University in Berlin began work on establishing and expanding the field of "Electronic Publishing". In 2002 the work was continued as a joint working group. The aim is to establish electronic publishing as a method for releasing research results at the Humboldt University. The provision of documents via the edoc server (the document and publication server of the Humboldt University of Berlin) is an important aspect here, as is the provision of training and intensive support for authors and publishers. The Electronic Publishing WG deals intensively with digital preservation issues in various projects. The main focus of the activities is on developing templates for the effective marking up of documents as the basis for subsequent transformation into the XML archive format. In addition to other cooperation activities in international working groups and projects in the field of standardisation for long-term digital preservation, the Electronic Publishing WG was a co-initiator and project partner of nestor. The Institute of Library and Information Science of the Humboldt University of Berlin offers a diverse range of courses in different areas. The "Digital Libraries" department conducts research and teaching in the field of long-term digital preservation. In the LuKII (LOCKSS and KOPAL infrastructure and interoperability) project the Institute and the Computer and Media Service are involved in the development of technical components in LOCKSS and KOPAL and the construction of a German-language LOCKSS network. A further aspect of the project involves establishing a German competence centre to support this network. As part of the LuKII project, the Humboldt University of Berlin has joined the Controlled LOCKSS (CLOCKSS) network, making it the first European partner.
