hebis Verbundzentrale
The Hessische BibliotheksInformationsSystem hebis is a network of academic libraries in Hessen and parts of Rhineland Palatinate. As the central service provider of hebis, the Verbundzentrale (hebis VZ) offers a wide array of technical services for libraries and their users.
The hebis Verbundzentrale heads the project „Langzeitverfügbarkeit an Hessischen Hochschulen (LaVaH)“. It provides long-term accessibility for the universities of Hessen and is funded by the Hessen State Ministry for Higher Education, Research and the Arts (HMWK). The goal is the development of an infrastructure for the long-term preservation of digital resources. Currently the project deals with text-based file formats as well as images and audio-visual files.
In collaboration with the universities, we will progressively build up a distributed infrastructure for long-term preservation with three levels of tasks:
Data management is done locally at the universities. hebis VZ is responsible for central archiving tasks, including ingest, central data management as well as preservation planning. It hosts the archiving software (Rosetta). The storage infrastructure is hosted by the data centres of the universities of Frankfurt and Darmstadt.
The Digitales Archiv der Hochschulen in Hessen (DAHH) is a network of universities archives for Hessen. The goal of the network is a common solution for ingest and preservation of digital resources. This includes the development of concepts for preservation as well as mutual support in the development of sustainable standards.
hebis VZ maintains the archiving software DIMAG which was developed by the Landesarchiv Baden-Württemberg.
