University Library of LMU Munich
The University Library of LMU Munich is a central service of the University, providing the LMU academic staff and students with scholarly literature and information in both print and electronic form. With total holdings of more than 5 million volumes, housed at various locations throughout Munich, it is one of the largest university library systems in the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition, as custodian of the LMU cultural heritage, the University Library of LMU is responsible for the preservation and cataloguing of a unique collection of valuable manuscripts and early prints, hosting Open Access platforms ensuring that electronic publications are visible to all.
Competence and areas of focus in long-term archiving
As part of the model project “eHumanities - interdisziplinär” (hosted jointly with the University Library of FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg and the LMU Center for Digital Humanities) together with the project “LaVe - Langfristige Verfügbarkeit und Nutzbarkeit von Forschungsdaten” (LaVe - long-term availability and usability of research data), hosted jointly with the University Library of FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg, the LMU University Library has been involved in developing sustainable solutions for the long-term management of research data since 2018. While eHumanities focused on the evaluation and implementation of suitable tools and services around research data management, LaVe has concentrated on the following three areas of long-term availability: conceptual and administrative preparatory work and prerequisites for the smooth transfer and preservation of research data; locally-based PID services for the improved management and identification of research data within a diverse data infrastructure landscape; enabling the connection of national and regional services to local infrastructures. Initial results from LaVe include a Best Practice Guide for recommended data formats (https://github.com/UB-LMU/Dateiformate_BestPracticeGuide) and a guide to website archiving (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10556375). Current activities at the LMU University Library also include topics such as Trusted Timestamps, or the handling of 3D data in the field of long-term archiving.
