Logo Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbesitz (SBB)

The Berlin State Library is a cultural and scientific institution of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and one of the largest and most efficient libraries in Europe. The extensive and diverse analog holdings - accumulated over several hundred years of library history - are supplemented by electronic resources as well as digital data and collections. As an archival library, the Berlin State Library is charged with protecting and preserving both analog and digital holdings.
For many years, the State Library has been digitizing its valuable holdings and offering them on various platforms such as the Digitized Collections and ZEFYS. In addition, the stock of original electronic holdings as well as unique electronic premature legacy and estates is also growing.

Competences and priorities in the area of long-term preservation

At the State Library, the Digital Long-Term Availability Unit deals with the challenge of preserving digital information such as digitised books, electronic publications, born-digital personal papers and other data, which may be available in various formats, some of which may be obsolete or proprietary, for future generations and ensuring their long-term availability. The staff unit advises on questions of long-term availability, creates concepts for a modular long-term archiving system and works with third parties to ensure the long-term availability of digital objects.
