University Library of Regensburg
With holdings that currently comprise 3.5 million books, 760,000 eBooks, over 50,000 ongoing subscriptions to print and online journals, and numerous other media and archival materials, the University Library of Regensburg (UBR) offers a vast variety of resources across all academic fields. The library’s core mission is to provide the researchers and students at the University of Regensburg with subject-specific literature and information. It also acts as a competent information services partner to the general public of the City of Regensburg and the region.
From its foundation in 1964 the UBR has been actively participating in innovative developments in the field of library services. At present, its focus lies especially on digital services, which for instance include the UR Library Services with EZB (Electronic Journals Library) and DBIS (Database Information System), as well as projects and services in the area of digitisation (such as the EU-funded project EODOPEN), research data, and digital preservation.
Competences and priorities in the area of long-term preservation
Since 2019, the University Library of Regensburg has headed the project “Digital Preservation for the Bavarian Library Network”. With its project partners, the Bavarian State Library and Bayreuth University Library, the UBR is establishing a digital preservation service available to all Bavarian universities and universities of applied sciences. The underlying infrastructure combines both centralised and decentralised components and is maintained jointly by the project partners and those institutions that participate in the preservation network as data providers.
Within the project, the UBR’s focus is in particular on the implementation of the organisational processes and business routines, as well as on the development of technical solutions for the transfer of digital data and objects into long-term storage. While the project partners in Bayreuth and Munich are mainly responsible for workflows for research data and digital copies, respectively, the UBR is designing an innovative approach for the preservation of open-access articles published through OJS (Open Journal Systems), which includes the review and revision process. Moreover, the UBR cooperates with related Bavarian projects in the fields of the digital humanities and research data management, as well as with the digital preservation initiatives in the states of Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Hamburg. Within these cooperations, the UBR’s objectives are to leverage synergies between parallel projects, share expertise in the form of Best Practice Guides, and establish digital preservation as a key topic of both the present and future.
