Navigation and service

29 March to 1 April 2024

The German National Library will be closed at both locations. The exhibitions of the German Museum of Books and Writing will open from 10:00 to 18:00.

Overview

The German National Library's weekly change service is intended to supply all users of full copies of the Integrated Authority File (GND) with regular metadata updates. This service is free of charge. It encompasses:

  • new entries
  • corrections
  • redirects
  • divisions
  • deletions

The data records are provided in MARC 21 format (also in XML structure). They can also be retrieved in RDFxml format using the online interface OAI. All formats are offered in UTF-8 decomposed character encoding.
The change service in MARC 21 or MARC 21-xml format comprises the latest version of the data records available at the time of selection. If the data record was changed several times during the selection period, the weekly change service will provided the latest version only; earlier changes will no longer be identifiable.

Redirects and deletions

Redirects and deletions are initially provided as notifications. They can be identified from leader position 5 = “c” and MARC field 682 with the text “Umlenkung” or “Loeschung”.

The data records are then shortened so that they only transport the most essential information (identifier and redirect target or deletion notification). The redirects are implemented in the ILTIS database.

In the following week, the shortened data records appear as “real” redirects (leader position 5 = “x”) or deletions (leader position 5 = “d”) in the GND change service. The shortened data records are kept in the database for some time, i.e. at least six months, so that they can be retrieved through OAI and SRU for longer periods.

Splits

In the case of splits, the entry at leader position 5 is also “c”. The text for the respective type of division is entered into field 682 (see table). Information about a split only remains in the data record for one weekly cycle. It is deleted from the data record after being delivered by the GND change service.
